Keen to hear from you
I am 64, tall (6’2’’) and slim, light-brown hair and brown eyes. I like — not necessarily in the order that follows — Muesli, films, current affairs (national press and BBC), tarama-salata, cycling, travelling (I have been to more than 70 countries), pickled cucumbers (Polish ones are best), reading (novels and essays), Chinese and Indian food (and other types of food, really), classical music, Lou Reed and The Doors, Weetabix, walks in the country, art exhibitions, having a drink or a meal with friends, and many more things, but I have to end this list at some point — so I shall end it here. I have been told that I have a good sense of humour and I speak French and Spanish.

Occupation:
I worked in the media for a long time -- less so now. I have worked in various fields, including journalism (trade press), public relations and teaching. I am pretty good at counting paper clips, which is a useful skill to have.
Education:
I studied History, Geography, and languages/translation (English/French).
Heritage:
I have a mixed background, some English, some Continental, West and East...I shall explain if you're interested. A true UK-based European, if there is such a category...
Religion:
I am not a religious person and I am very close to being an atheist, but I am interested in religion(s) as philosophies of life. Obviously, I respect all religious faiths.
Politics:
A complex question that would need developing... For a start, the 'left' V 'right' divide ought to be clarified, since many people would, for instance, argue that Tony Blair is right-wing... (If you don't remember who Tony Blair is, you can Google him and he should come up.) :-)
Appearance:
I can't cook, and some people consider that it is a disability. I can't drive either.
Languages Spoken:
Spanish, French; I am thinking of learning Guarani (spoken in Paraguay). I can understand basic Italian and reading Portuguese is fairly easy as I know Spanish. I did years of Latin at school but don't use it an awful lot these days: my Latin is rusty. I can say 'thank you' in many languages, including Hungarian, Slovak and Greek.
Musical Instruments played:
I did the recorder at school and hated it. But I can whistle while shaving in the morning. Not very well. I love classical music, however.
Music Enjoyed:
60s music, 70s music, 80s music, Blues, Classical, Jazz, Pop, Reggae, World Music. A soft spot for Bruckner, Russian classic composers, and Lou Reed, among others. And Chopin. And Bob Marley. (I hear they don't play together.)
Sports and exercise:
Gym, Cycling. I also do a fair amount of walking. Fairly recent achievements have included walking from Greenwich to London Bridge along the Thames Path: about 4 hrs, south side, then north side (not on the same day, I hasten to add). I also do some cycling, but not as often as I used to. I used to play volleyball but had to stop, due to a wobbly knee.
Interests and activities:
Internet, Theatre, Writing, Art, Concerts, Countryside, Eating Out, Friends, History, Painting, Politics, Pubs, Reading, Sculpture, Travel, Walking. I also enjoy sleeping, when I get the time - and will have a lie-in at the weekend, if possible. (I sleep in a concentrated and productive manner, known as 'power sleeping': it is a new thing.)
Animals and Pets:
I used to keep a small elephant in my back garden; he was very friendly and his name was Mini-D (D for Dumbo, o'course). He has now retired and lives on a farm in the West Country.
Newspapers and magazines:
Telegraph, Economist, Evening Standard, Financial Times, Guardian, The Times. I am voracious in the news department: I even find METRO interesting. I read THE SUN when I have lunch in the local caf.: it is actually quite entertaining in its own way - a bit like a comic book for adults.
Books:
Bruce Chatwin, Charles Dickens, George Orwell, Guy de Maupassant, Ian Fleming, Jack Kerouac, John Le Carre, Vladimir Nabokov, I like G Orwell's writings, among others. Other favourites: Somerset Maugham, Raymond Chandler, Flaubert, E A Poe, and many many more. I don't really follow the latest in 'contemporary' literature, I'm afraid.
Favourite Films:
Breakfast at Tiffany's, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Casablanca, Inception, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Maltese Falcon, No Country for Old Men, Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan, ShawShank Redemption, Some Like It Hot, The Big Lebowski, The Matrix. And many more. I very much enjoy watching films on my computer at home; I don't go to the cinema that often nowadays.
Enjoyable evening out:
Restaurant, , Cinema, Meal, Pub, Wine bar, Musical. I like to discover new places (e.g.: trendy restaurants in Shanghai - do you know any?).
Favourite Dishes:
A Chinese banquet, Fish and Chips, Handmade Pizza, Lemongrass and ginger marinated chicken, Pate de Foie Gras, Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding, Smoked Salmon, Steak and chips, Veal Escalope. I can't cook but I can eat. (I can also do the washing-up, but I can't say it is my favourite form of leisure.)
Ideal Holiday:
Driving slowly around Ireland, Learning to paint in Provence, Safari in Africa, Scuba diving in Thailand, Driving across the US. The US, I have crossed it already, actually, twice, but there are a few places I could go back to, such as Albuquerque. I would like to learn how to paint, when I have more time on my hands. I could then become a rich and famous artist. Watch this space. :-)
In another life:
Leonardo Da Vinci, Me again!, an artist, a film director, a musician, a travel writer, Audrey Hepburn, a cat, a golden eagle, an author, an explorer. I wouldn't mind being rich, handsome, and intelligent. Well, I am already, really -- very nearly.
Personality:
Adventurous, Cautious, Courageous, Creative, Eccentric, Practical, Predictable, Reserved, Romantic, Tolerant, Affectionate, Aware, Caring, Considerate, Different, Friendly, Humorous, Imaginative, Independent, Intellectual, Loving, Modest, Reliable, Sensitive, Sociable, Strong willed, Thoughtful. Some people say I am 'eccentric', but I beg to differ: I am a non-conformist, however, that's for sure.
